Help me give my students books to support math and science and a great hands-on tool to promote their understanding of numbers, counting, and basic computation.
My students are mostly first-time school attendees and curious about learning and working with their peers! They come from a variety of backgrounds and have a wide range of experiences prior to starting school. As a math teacher, I know hands-on activities using manipulatives is one way to increase engagement. Also supporting students number sense and math comprehension can be supported by math themed picture books to reinforce their skills. I hope to be able to provide a wide variety of math materials to engage my two classes of kindergarteners this year!
My Project
I am so excited to make these materials available to my two kindergarten classes! First of all, the dozen books will support math (counting) and science concepts we will explore this year. The large rekenrek will allow teacher modeling as well and student participation and engagement in the lesson. The individual rekenreks will give each student the opportunity to show what they know and allow me to assess throughout the lesson who is successfully grasping the number concepts taught and who may need additional support. The hands-on nature and each student having their own rekenrek will keep students thinking, learning, and engaged- the goal! Finally the dots sets will provide a small group center for a pair of students to practice their math fluency collaboratively.
