My students need 20 scientific calculators to use between home and school, a liquid measuring set, a measurement conversion guide, and a wipe off graph.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Why should a student have to go without a basic educational resource? I ask myself this question daily! My goal is to solve this problem by providing my students with calculators and other math materials such as measuring tools.
My students are 5th grade inner city kids.
Most of them come from economically disadvantaged families and lack basic resources at home. Our school is a public charter school that serves low income families. We try to create a safe student centered environment. Our mission is to be a beacon of light in our community while educating our future leaders.
My Project
Having these calculators will allow me to set up a student check out system. This will give my students an opportunity to check out calculators daily and use them between home and school. My goal is to bridge the gap between the lack of resources at home and at school. The measuring cups and chart will enhance their understanding of converting units. It's easy to write it and talk about it, but seeing it can make all the difference. My students are visual and hands-on learners. Having the wipe off graph will also help them sharpen their graphing skills. I will post it on the wall in my room, and we will use it daily.
This project will have a life long impact on my students.
Many of them have never had calculators and other math related tools at home. My goal is to change the way they think about doing homework and change the way they think about math by supplying them with these 20 calculators, measuring supplies, and wipe off graph.
