Kindergarten is an essential year in learning how to count and what numbers mean! This number sense is the foundation for the rest of the math that these children will do in their life time.
This is a great class of students at a richly diverse school in Washington.
Over 70% of our school's population qualifies for free/reduced lunch and over 30 languages are spoken at the school. I have only known these students for less than two weeks at this point, but they have already impressed me with their desire to learn and their excitement about school.
My Project
These counting boxes will be so valuable for all of these students. They provide a super engaging and kid-friendly context for learning the names and meanings of numbers. Students will have access to these counting boxes every day during math centers (a partner based math exploration time). There are even enough that every student in the class can participate at the same time! They can be used year long in a variety of different ways and modified so that students of all abilities can learn while using them.
This project is very important to these students.
You will be providing them with a rich and engaging tool that will provide them access to numbers and number sense. These boxes are not something that I can make or craft at home - they cannot be replicated. The counting boxes are so valuable in engaging students in these early years of school. Thank you in advance!
