Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is a dual-language classroom in a Title I school district. This means my students all come from Spanish-speaking homes, and most of them come from poverty. My students are trying to learn all the objectives that the state requires them to learn at the same time that they are trying to learn a new language.
Due to Hurricane Harvey last year, we lost many classroom materials, and many of my students lost almost everything in their homes, as well.
I have not been able to replace many of these materials that were lost.
In the last few days, we have had very bad weather and many places in our district were flooded again. This brought back many bad memories for my students. I want to help give them better memories to hold on to their first year in school.
My Project
The pretend play center in my classroom is always a favorite of my four and five year olds. They practice many language skills when they are pretending to be in the house or at the restaurant and they have so much fun doing it.
If I could integrate Math and Science skills into our pretend play center, the students would have so much more fun and their Math and Science skills would sky-rocket!
All the materials I have requested are directly linked to Math and Science skills that my kids need to learn. The fruits and vegetables sorting kit and the cookie design kit will help them improve their sorting skills. The cookie counting kit and the Counting 1-10 food item kit will give them a better sense of rote counting as well as the one to one correspondence skill. The food groups kit will help them sort, but also learn more about the food pyramid during Science class. And the pizza, taco, and sandwich sets will teach them about texture in things which is also a Science skill that they must learn.
Practicing these skills in a fun environment will help my students learn them faster!
