Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 7th and 8th grade students are an exuberant bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun. Our students are diversity personified: from painfully shy to audacious; from studious to silly; from spoiled to neglected; from being treasured to experiencing trauma. Recently, several students have had parents deported, and they don't know when or if they will see that parent again. When they arrive at my door each day, some are ready to be challenged and others are ready to be challenging!
My Project
Home Economics is a great class for students work together and learn about health and how to cook nutritious foods. Because of the nature of the class, we have constant needs to replenish our supplies; unfortunately, our school budgets our entire program only $800 a year. With this small amount of money, it would be impossible to buy enough food for 50 kids to cook once per week. Luckily for us, DonorsChoose.org has been an amazing resources to fill in the gaps.
We are struggling to have enough storage space, and these shelves would be a great addition to our kitchens so we could store the many items that really don't fit into our small cabinets.
Our drawers are also stuffed to the brim, which is why I'm asking for countertop utensil holders, so we can store our spoons and spatulas in a convenient location, be able to find items more easily, and not have our drawers get stuck because they're overloaded. The dish towels would help the students in class wash dishes in two separate class periods. Our old towels are getting a little tired after nearly two years of heavy duty. The wooden spoons would be helpful for groups who need to be cooking separate components of a single dish. We currently have four wooden spoons for four kitchens, and we could really use some more. The other items—compostable plates and aluminum foil sheets—get used in nearly all our labs, so when we run out of them, it's nearly crippling. We really appreciate any support you can give us. We're the only Home Ec class in our district, and we want to make this program stick around!
