Have you ever been in a special needs, preschool classroom? In our room, we have children with all disabilities. Some of my children need items that will foster communication and play skills. Some have no communication skills and are unable to verbalize their wants and needs. Some need sensory deficits met.
In my classroom, I can have up to twenty students, all with special needs.
We are a cross-categorical classroom, which means that we can have children with all disabilities. There are two special needs, pre-K classrooms in my school. I teach both of them. Half the day, I work with higher functioning children, and the second half of the day I work with kiddos who need more support to be successful.
In any given year, I have students with autism, down syndrome, significant developmental delays, or even EBD. They are all the sweetest children there are, but they are delayed in one or more areas. We are in a public school that houses grades Pre-K-2 and special needs Pre-K.
My Project
With these math manipulatives, we will be able to work on foundational skills like counting, sorting, colors, using tweezers to strengthen their hands while using 1:1 correspondence. These skills are vital to helping us close the gap between them and the typical peers. By using various tools to help them, they won’t get bored with materials, therefore keeping them interested and engaged in the topic I am teaching. My kiddos need the extra support to learn the skills that others may grasp. I will do whatever I need to get them the help they need!
