Engineers, lawyers, CEOs, and doctors are developing in our math class every day. That's right, my students have expressed an interest in these careers and many more. Sadly, we often lack the engaging resources to cultivate the math skills necessary for these professions. You can change that!
Our classroom is a vibrant, expressive place filled with students who sincerely desire to learn.
Our school is a Title I school, which means our students come from low income and poverty stricken homes. Many of my students come from single parent families where the adult works 2 or 3 jobs to support 3 and more children. I am a first year teacher and I chose to work in an urban school because I have a passion to see students in every circumstance have equal opportunities to achieve excellence in academics. Our school district was recently awarded "Race to the Top" federal funding which they have used to train teachers in higher cognitive math skills. As a result, my students are more aware of their mathematical thinking and have begun to actively engage in math conversation and group projects.
My Project
Since I am a first year teacher, I inherited my classroom and its resources. At this time I have extremely limited math manipulatives. In 5th grade, our students are required to fully master fractions, percents, and decimals. The items requested will provide engaging activities for students to practice newly learned skills. Several of the components on the list will be used as math centers that students can use in groups to create meaningful math connections between the skills learned and the real world.
Research indicates that students remember the first and last 10 minutes of a lesson more than any other part.
Using the tools you help us buy, my students can support their learning at the end of each lesson with these resources. Beyond that, the games and centers in this project will help my students make real world connections with their learning. Every teacher dreads the inevitable question, "Why do I need to know this?" In my room the answer is a resounding, "It is essential to your future".
