Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Why is Texas education rated so low in comparison to other states? I believe it is because we do not use the same standards as other states. This year, I want to implement the new Common Core standards, but we do not have materials to teach this curriculum.
Our school is an applied learning school where students' learning is primarily through project based and hands-on learning activities.
The students are excited about learning and hardly miss any days of school. The majority of students in my class are from low income households and English language learners at various levels of English development.
Because students are learning English, it is important to provide background knowledge through the use of real objects or through the use of visuals they can manipulate. Our students come to school curious and ready to learn. Many of them have never been in a structured environment, where learning is very rigorous. With the new Common Core standards, students are continuously challenged. They must stay interested and motivated in order to learn.
My Project
I am requesting a foundational skills teaching center, a common core math standards center, and the common core writing center for my class room. These resources are aligned with the Kindergarten common core standards. There are materials for teaching, as well as for center activities. There are both math and language games, as well as writing activities. These materials will allow me to teach the standards and for the students to practice learning these important skills independently during centers. It is important that the students have the materials necessary to learn all of the new standards.
The Common Core standards are very rigorous.
Students are learning more now than they ever have in the past. It is important that we provide students with as much opportunity to practice the skills necessary to move on to first grade.
