My students are active learners, compassionate peers, and continually-developing individuals. As a new school counselor, I am excited to jump in head first and facilitate social emotional learning for 300 students in the Kansas City Metro area.
3rd-5th graders are in a transformative time of their lives as they learn how to navigate changing bodies, minds, and abilities.
We can all remember back to times when we experienced feelings of anxiety, peer rejection, uncertainty, and establishing independence. During such a developmental time, social, emotional, and career development support is vital in providing students the skills they need to be successful for the rest of their lives.
My Project
I need your support in helping create a counseling classroom in my school. I am transitioning from being a math teacher to a school counselor. I am confident in my ability to adapt materials previously used in math for my counseling and need some additional materials to fill the gaps.
The transition from middle school teaching to elementary school counseling leaves gaps for developmentally appropriate tools.
This project will provide calming tools, books for bibliotherapy, research-based counseling references, and objects to promote emotional regulation in the classroom. School counselors fill a vital role in promoting social emotional learning, character development, and career influence.
