Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students, like most others, are very creative and inquisitive... when technology is involved. My students can quickly learn to program a drone or create a digital storyboard to present a topic. For example, my students are quite capable of programming a drone to navigate through a maze. But when given actual objects and asked to use their imaginations to build obstacles in the maze, students are suddenly at a loss as to how to approach this task.

When it is time to unplug and work with tangible objects my students increasingly display a sense of frustration.

It is the same frustration I see when students are working in math to solve a problem. My students are hardworking and have a desire to learn, but they need a different way to be shown problem solving skills.

My Project

Last school year I was able to revive my school’s STEM Club. In doing so, I worked with students outside of my classroom and the curriculum I am required to teach. I enjoyed teaching my club about STEM. Students enjoyed most of the projects we did, they loved the technology aspect of STEM. However, I quickly discovered that my students did not enjoy projects that involved them building and working with tangible objects. More often than not they couldn't figure out ways to approach the projects and became frustrated enough to completely stop working at them. Oddly enough it was the same frustration that I saw when students were solving problems in math class. Their frustration and desire to abandon their projects surprised me because some of the best memories from my childhood were the moments where I was working with my hands to build and make things.

I came to the conclusion that I wanted to take a step away from technology and instead have my students explore building by using concrete and tangible tools.

I landed on the idea of a “shop class” type experience. I would like to provide a club where students can learn to use screwdrivers, ratchets, wrenches and other hand tools to safely take projects from start to finish. I selected power tools like Black+Decker drills/drivers and jigsaw, Hitachi miter saw, and a circular saw as well so that students can do more than just assemble project kits. Students will be able to learn and build their own designs using wood and other materials.

My goal is for students to learn the value of making things with their hands and how the problem solving approach to building things can translate back into success in the classroom.
