Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a largely Hispanic population of 6th-8th grade students at a Charter School in an urban area. Most of the students that I teach (approximately 90%) receive reduced or free lunch. While I focus primarily on the 6th grade Humanities curriculum, my schedule has recently expanded to include 7th and 8th grade writing enrichment. I am excited about the opportunity to teach students varying in grade-level, however challenged with the fact that there is currently no writing enrichment curriculum in place.
I spent the summer thinking of possible solutions to address this concern, and came up with the idea of creating the Cougar Chronicles, or a school newspaper. My school doesn’t publish anything like a school newspaper, and I’m excited about the prospect of what this writing enrichment class could entail. A school newspaper will not only allow my students to practice, refine, and find voice in their writing, but also will create a sense of obligation and value inside the school community.
By donating a printer/scanner and a digital camera for my classroom, my students will be able to create and publish a newspaper to distribute to the students, faculty, and staff of our middle school and community. Right now, my students have access to computers, but no access to a printer. By donating a printer/scanner and digital camera to our classroom cause, you would really be helping to kick off a positive writing curriculum in our middle school.
With your support, my students would take ownership in creating a publication that their peers, family, teachers, and friends would read. With your help, I believe students will develop a love for reading and writing in a positive learning environment. If this project is funded, I would send you the very first publication of our school newspaper and pictures of my students working on the editorial staff. Thank you for your support!
