Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the honor of instructing 8th-grade SCHOLARS in United States History at a diverse public middle school in Stamford, Connecticut. Our school building is highly diverse, both ethnically and socioeconomically, with a significant percentage of English Language Learners and scholars who receive free and reduced lunch. We have over 25 nationalities represented in our school which celebrates our similarities and differences. Despite their varied backgrounds, my students share a love of learning, exploration, and technology. Our diversity allows us to learn not only from the curriculum but from each other, making every experience and every day a learning opportunity.
I attempt to provide as much EQUITY as possible in my classroom to ensure ALL students have an opportunity to be successful.
Among other learning experiences during the school year, students are required to complete an independent research and service-learning project as a “capstone” to their middle school experience. As such, I would like to give them the technological tools and experiences necessary to be ready for this project and the independence they will experience as they move into high school in a few short months.
My Project
Through the use of these Chromebooks, my students will be able to utilize Google Apps for Education and, therefore, experience the advantages of an online digital learning environment. Students will be able to conduct and record their research digitally, collaborate with peers, write up project proposals, journal about their service-learning and create phenomenal presentations. Beyond this project, students will have the opportunity to learn what it means to be a good digital citizen as well as basic computer skills such as keyboarding. Access to Chromebooks will give my students the opportunity to learn to be more responsible for their own learning and the tools they need to become successful in higher education and life-long learners.
