We need room to write. My fourth graders need room to write out long multistage math problems, concept maps, and writing outlines. We need a large magnetic white board for our classroom. Currently we have cork board and our school cannot afford to buy us a large white board.
My students are 30 fourth graders from a tough inner city neighborhood.
They are primarily English Language Learners who speak Spanish and Cantonese. They are energetic and enthusiastic students who love music, reading, science, and math games. They attend a Title 1 school in a large school district. Our school regularly struggles to meet supply needs and this is our first year with a second 4th grade classroom so we are starting from scratch.
My Project
We are requesting a large magnetic white board to replace the cork board that we currently have in our room. On this board students would be able to do the multistage math problems that are standard in fourth grade. They would also be able to demonstrate multiple method math, which is a common core standard. Students would also be able to create graphic organizers, concept maps, and outlines. This work would improve their math skills, reading comprehension (across subjects), English Language, and writing development. The magnetic aspect of this board would allow us to use more resources during lessons such as student work, maps, and manipulatives.
This equipment is standard in classrooms and providing it would literally be helping my students close that achievement gap.
If we want them to not only meet our expectations but exceed them, then we need to provide them with at least the basic supplies. Any help or support would make a real everyday difference in my students lives.
