Dear generous donor, I am an eleven year veteran teacher, at an early childhood school in Harlem, New York. I am currently teaching kindergarten, though I have taught first and second grade over the years. My school is a Title One school, which means that most students are at or below the poverty level and receive free or reduced lunch. Though I love many subjects, one of my favorites is writing with my young students. Through their writing, they learn how to read, reach an audience and gain tremendous self esteem. So much growth and success is evident each month as they complete a book. Each month they 'publish' a book, covering a variety of genres, just like real authors. Unfortunately, copies of special paper and copies in general cannot be made because I share an old, broken copy machine with forty other teachers. It is not often maintained because of the number of other needs that have to be met in our school. Copies that could go home would help to foster support at home, by giving parents the opportunity to see their children's work, when they are unable to visit the class. When I model writing strategies and techniques, I have found it most useful and meaningful to use an overhead. For the last five years, I have waited for replacement bulbs, which never seem to be in stock. They are not a priority item, so my students and I continue to wait. I hope that you are able to help my young authors develop as writers and share their success with their families with your donation.
