Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For some students, the school building is their safe haven. Today and for over a week, my students have abruptly lost their safe haven.

A great deal of my students struggle with safety, poverty and fear of deportation.

Most are performing below grade level in reading and math. There are limited resources for both staff and students and despite their many challenges, my students come to school and are expected to make academic progress regardless of the heavy emotional burdens they carry.

I am a Social Worker split between two Title I schools with an enrollment of over 1,000 students. These schools are located in diverse, low-income, urban neighborhoods. 100% of the student population receives free breakfast, lunch and snack.

On a regular day, the disparities between urban and suburban school funding is egregious. The current Corona Virus school shut down, has served to exacerbate their barrier to accessing education essentially overnight.

My Project

The Corona Virus has disrupted lives worldwide. Schools are implementing distance learning programs practically overnight without having had proper training, materials or preparation. Please help me provide emotional support during this time of distance learning.

This unprecedented time in the world has created stress and anxiety amongst all, especially children.

Students need to feel safe in order to engage in learning. These books will help process their emotions during this disruption. I will be able to continue supporting my student's emotional needs by using these materials in virtual sessions.

By donating to my project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus, you will ultimately help improve their emotional intelligence and coping abilities during a time that they will always remember.
