With the weather getting warmer and the citywide tests almost over, my students are finding it harder and harder to sit still and learn at their desks all day. I have figured out a way to allow my students to continue learning while catering to their rambunctious warm weather energies: Math Athletics! I have developed several math athletic games such as Coordinate Dodge ball, Integer Around the World, and Pythagorean Frisbee. In Coordinate Dodge Ball, we turn the gym into a coordinate grid and have students try to avoid getting hit with a dodge ball as they run from one named coordinate to another. Integer Around the World reinforces students' mental math skills with integers. Pythagorean Frisbee allows students to get a hands-on understanding of triangles and the Pythagorean theorem by playing Frisbee in right triangle formations. In order to make my math athletic dream a reality, I need your help. I need dodge balls, Frisbees, basketballs, cones, and sidewalk chalk for equipment and set-up of these fabulous mathematical games. My students would be so grateful for these supplies. My 7th graders get only 90 minutes of physical education each week and have to share 2 footballs and 2 basketballs between 70 of them. Not only would your contribution help give them the physical education time that they desperately need to succeed in all aspects of the school day, but it would give them a wonderful and lasting connection between math and fun. Thank you in advance for your support!
