Exceptional teenagers are the students I have this year at our local high school. I have amazing kids ranging from 14 to 18 years old that want to learn about essential things to better their lives when they go out into the "real" world!
They teach me so much every single day and they are the coolest, most amazing kids!
I have a variety of students with physical challenges, intellectual and sensory impairments, as well as other challenges that require extra practice completing task of daily living and communication to people around them in society.
My Project
Inspired by a teacher in Texas, Shelbie Winder, I fell in love with this idea of providing my 10 life skills students the opportunity to open, manage our inventory, shop from a list they create, cook and follow recipes correctly, create appropriate food items, and run a small business from our classroom. We will be accepting donations only for replenishing our grocery supplies. The students will be responsible for managing and keeping track of the donations we do receive. They will get to practice social skills with the staff and other students in our building. We have started discussing the Business Plan and they have ideas written down as to what they want their business to be, who we are serving, and goals for this idea.
I showed my class a video of a high school coffee cart business and their specific question before watching was, "Would you guys like to do something like this at our school?" Towards the end of the video they all started saying "YES" we would love to do that!
"Sounds neat."
So this is where Cooper's Cafe' came to play. My students, classroom assistants, and myself are excited about all of the true life skills this opportunity will teach.
