Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our preschool through eighth grade community is dedicated to providing a safe and positive learning environment in which students will be encouraged and supported to reach their full academic potential. We are an inner-city Title 1 school where all students qualify for free breakfast and lunch.
We believe that EVERY CHILD is capable of success…NO EXCEPTIONS!
Our teachers and staff value:
• Effective instruction
• Positive school culture and climate
• Intervention support services
• Community activities
• Development of leadership skills
My Project
Cooperative learning is a successful teaching strategy in which small teams, each with students of different levels of ability, use a variety of learning activities to improve their understanding of a subject. Each member of a team is responsible not only for learning what is taught but also for helping teammates learn, thus creating an atmosphere of achievement. The professional resource books I am requesting provide information and guidance for teachers to use Kagan Structures (a cooperative learning framework) in the classroom.
Documented results include improved academic achievement, improved behavior and attendance, increased self-confidence and motivation, and increased liking of school and classmates.
Cooperative learning is also relatively easy to implement and is inexpensive.
I want to use these Kagan books to effectively implement cooperative learning while teaching math and reading. I am not very creative so it is helpful to have these resources to use.
