Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our third grade classroom is a busy hub where we are learning everyday; not only important content, but also how to interact with each other in a positive and collaborative way.
My students are a culturally and ethnically diverse group of children who inspire me daily.
They attend an arts-themed charter school in which 90% of the students are learning English as a second language and 100% receive free lunch based on their socio-economic status. They are hard workers who are excited about learning, but who need to overcome obstacles at every turn (at home, in school, and in their communities) to achieve their goals. I am continually trying new strategies to engage my students in authentic, engaging learning experiences. This year, we are working on project-based learning, arts integration across the curriculum, and building a love of reading. I am also working to build strong relationships with my students by visiting them at their homes throughout the year. I really love this group of kids, and they make me excited to go to work each day!
My Project
In the past year, I've turned my classroom upside down to implement a new small group learning rotation model. This has allowed my students to meet with me in small groups, as well as work together cooperatively at their tables while I'm meeting with other groups. This change has led to better learning, happier students, and a more focused teacher! The two round tables donated by this project will allow students to interact with each other in a comfortable way throughout their school day.
This donation will allow my students to move from old, restrictive individual desks to cooperative tables where they can interact with their classmates for more engaging and productive learning.
