Our high school serves approximately 2500 tenth, eleventh, and twelfth graders. They are a very diverse population at 40% Hispanic, 15% Marshalese, 10% African American, and 35% Caucasian. Approximately 70% of those students receive a free lunch or reduced lunch rate. Last year, I started a board game club as an opportunity for the students to unplug and interact with one another, and it has become wildly popular.
With the need to connect with their friends and peers, the social emotional support that the students receive at board game club is now more important than ever.
We are going into the school year in uncertain times, and it is important that our students have a place where they can anchor themselves, to unplug and shut out the stresses of both school and the pandemic, at least for an hour or so.
My Project
Our students have loved the opportunity to get together and have a moment to play, an opportunity that seems to have disappeared in a high school setting.
Meeting the social emotional needs of each student in the age of technology is becoming so important, especially during the current pandemic.
With all of the complexity in the back to school process, relationship building between students and their teachers is going to be essential, and will be a considerable payoff that your donation can provide.
Many of the board games offer opportunities for both competitive and cooperative play (against each other, or as a team) and all are built heavily around interacting with one another.
