My students need calming strategy books, noise-cancelling headphones, and a visual timer to help them identify their emotions, develop a skill set of ways to cool down independently, and come back ready to learn.
I have a very diverse group of curious, active students with a broad range of learning styles. A number of my students come from low-income households, and several students are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple in the classroom and provide them with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My classroom is a place for students to feel safe, as well as to learn a set of coping skills to overcome the challenges they face.
In our classroom, we use mindfulness techniques to calm down. After recess and other exciting activities, we use deep breathing and yoga to get ourselves ready for learning. However, as seven and eight year olds, there are a number of other things that can cause students to feel upset, anxious or angry. A number of students currently lack the ability to independently deal with their emotions in a positive way. We work on identifying our feelings, and finding ways to react in a beneficial way. Our room has a "cooling station" where students can spend some time to calm down, do yoga poses or snuggle with a stuffed animal.
My Project
As much as we focus on mindfulness in our classroom, students still need time and experience practicing calming strategies. While there is a cooling station in our room, the resources provided in this project will benefit the students immensely.
Donations from this project will provide my students with tools to calm down and self-regulate their emotions in the classroom, as well as teach them a skillset of calming strategies to be used beyond the classroom walls.
Students will be able to use these five great storybooks to identify with the characters, as well as find ways to cool off that work uniquely for them. The noise-cancelling headphones will provide students with a quiet space to calm down without any outside auditory distractions. The visual timer will allow students to keep track of their time in the cooling station, as well as give them a visual reminder of when it is time to rejoin the class.
