Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Teaching in a bungalow classroom in South Central Los Angeles, I hear concerns from my students about staying thirsty during a long, hot day. Our classroom is far away from the bathrooms, and oftentimes, the water fountains do are not working. I request a mini-refrigerator to store cold water for my students during the day. I teach English as a Second Language and Social Studies to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students at Drew Middle School in South LA. Our school is 80% Latino and 20% African American, and 90% of our students are on the free or reduced lunch program. Not all students have money to buy bottled drinks, and oftentimes the sugar-filled juices that the school sells are detrimental to the learning environment. I have a water-only policy in my classroom, and all of my students would benefit from a small refrigerator where I could store mini-bottles of water to distribute during class. I teach 75 different students throughout the day, each one of whom would benefit from a small refrigerator to provide cool water. This resource is re-usable, and I could continue to use the fridge each semester to serve students for years to come.
