My Students

A typical begins teaching 6-12 graders science in an alternative school. I then travel throughout my school district to teach homebound students. My day ends with me returning to school to teach 6-8 graders science/ELA. "Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself." John Dewy

I teach at-risk students in a rural setting.

I have 3 different groups (6-12 science students, 6-8 science/ELA students and PreK-12 homebound students. For various reasons, I have to travel to each homebound student’s home to teach them. Even though they have to receive instruction outside of the normal school setting, I want each child to have access to as many of the materials and supplies that they would normally use to learn at school. Due to this, I have a “traveling classroom”. My other 2 groups of students (6-12 science students, 6-8 science/ELA students) are in a small group alternative setting. Many of the students need differentiated instruction. I use interactive notebooks to accommodate their variety of learning styles.

My Project

Markers, glue sticks, & colored paper are used to enhance the students’ interactive notebooks. Interactive notebooks are a key tool for instruction. They help students organize their learning & make the lesson accessible to students of differing learning styles. Examples of how my students’ use them daily are to take & illustrate their notes, make charts, draw & label diagrams, & for lesson reflections. The students use color to show their understanding of the lesson. Colors also allow for student creativity in their work. Small dry erase boards are a tool that I use daily to check individual understanding of the lesson. Without the benefits of a large dry erase board found in classrooms, they are a crucial tool in my “traveling classroom”. They serve as an efficient way to model to my homebound students & for them to show me their work.

Donations from this project will improve my classroom & change my students’ lives for the better by providing us with materials to meet their multiple learning styles & allow me to see quickly each student’s understanding of the lesson.

This will allow for immediate feedback to increase their learning.
