Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from different backgrounds and homes. Many of my students come from low-income families. Most of them receive free or reduced price lunch. Some of them do not have enough money to buy school supplies. Some of them need to walk to school because they do not have enough money for a bus. Many of our students deal with different family issues that greatly impact their academic and behavioral performance.
Writing is an area many of my students struggle with and they need to be able to see hard copies of their work, but with restricted materials, they cannot reach their maximum potential.
My students experience parents getting divorced, a lack of parents, having a baby in their young age, being homeless, babysitting siblings, working to help out their parents, etc. Most of our students are Hispanic. I have a good number of students with special education needs as well as ELL students. Many of our students will be the first in their families to go to college.
My Project
Most of my students are struggling readers or they don't like to read.
Students love to have a place of their own.
In my classroom, I have often struggled to provide a comfortable space for students to use when they need time to themselves, a quiet place to read or just a spot where they can relax (after they finish their work). A reading corner can be this place. It presents a comfortable space for students that can improve motivation and engagement in your classroom.
I want to provide a quiet and comfortable place for students to read independently or with a partner or small group. I want to create a reading area that includes comfortable seating (bean bag chairs, pillows, carpet squares, even a small couch, if possible); a plant or two, and a couple of lamps for atmosphere.
