Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Why is so much young adult fiction aimed at young women? Boys want to read, too! We just have to put the right kinds of books in their hands.
I'm a tenth grade literacy teacher in NYC.
I have a classroom library to encourage students to become readers, and a significant part of our class time is devoted to developing reading skills and a love of reading.
Most of my students come to the 10th grade reading at least two grade levels below where they should be. Many of my students are struggling readers and are not likely to go to the public library on their own to find a book. It's difficult to get them to read without very current, very appealing books in the library. I want our classroom to be full of books that they will be excited to read. After teaching in underfunded NYC schools for almost a decade, I'm getting a good idea of what some of those books are. I've also listened to countless young men ask me, "Do you have any books about war? What about something that's not a story?"
My Project
So, for this proposal, I am requesting a variety of young adult fiction and non-fiction books to add to my classroom library. I am requesting books that I know will appeal to boys, and the kinds of books they continually ask me for and that I'm frustrated to not have. We truly have a literacy crisis among young men - and particularly young men of color - that we can begin to work against by helping them see reading as something that is for them.
I hope by having books readily accessible for the students, that they will be able to meet the NYC standard of reading 24 books per school year and go on to be engaged, successful college students.
With your kind donation, I can put books into the hands of my wonderful teenagers.
