Working in middle school, as a special education teacher, I have the opportunity to teach various subjects to students ranging from fifth through eighth grade. My students come from a very small/rural town in West Virginia. They come from a very diverse background, and drug addiction is running through this area at a very rapid pace; therefore, several children in this area have been impacted first hand by this vicious epidemic, so quality adult/child family time is essential.
With this program, I have given my students the opportunity to learn valuable life skills, as well as the opportunity for beneficial family time when they share these skills with their family members.
My Project
My "Cooking Without a Kitchen" project has taken off and has become very successful! On a daily basis, my students ask me what we are cooking and ask if we can make a particular dish.
Over Christmas break, several of my students used their skills while helping create their family meals.
Several of them prepared french toast casserole for their family to enjoy on Christmas morning, and two of them even used their newfound knowledge and created their own butter! I cannot be more pleased with the direction and the success of this project; however, due to the success, we are in need of several more consumables, as well as some portable stove tops. I would love to be able to teach them how to prepare pasta, as well as other dishes on the stove top, but that requires additional appliances.
