Our students are creative, curious and motivated learners. They love to cook in the classroom. We have had the opportunity to make lemonade, cookies, playdough and tortillas so far. For some of my kindergarteners, this is their opportunity to try things they wouldn't normally eat.
The students are excited about learning how to cook more in the classroom.
Students enjoy reading recipes, following directions and taking the recipes home to make with their family. Students are integrating science, math, social studies, health, art and reading as they are cooking. They are enjoying cooking so much that is doesn't even feel like work for them-they are just having fun with their peers. However, they are learning important, academic life skills while cooking.
My Project
Supplying students with cooking equipment will give us the ability to integrate learning with practical life skills. Students will use math while measuring and counting ingredients. Students will explore science as they are taking what we are growing in the garden and turning into healthy snacks. Also, watching things go from solid to liquid and talking about the process food goes through. Students will practice their reading skills by reading recipes and sharing them with their families. Students will practicing writing and graphing as they take surveys about what recipes their peers enjoyed.
We would also like to make a Kindergarten cookbook!
Students will have the added bonus of trying new food with their peers in a fun and relaxed environment. Our next PBL project is going to be about healthy eating for healthy, happy bodies. Our ending product will be making a healthy snacks recipe book.
Getting more supplies to cook with would mean that we would have the opportunity to make more things and be more creative. For example: a vitamix would provide us with a quick way to make healthy juice, soups, dips and salsas. The knives are child friendly so it would provide them with more things they would be able to do when we cook. Students can use the peelers to peel fruits and vegetables. Having a crock pot provide us with the opportunity to make applesauce and soups. Students will use the vegetable holders to keep their fingers safe while cutting fruits and vegetables. The supplies we are requesting are safe for the students to use and will give them more cooking opportunities!
