Our students come to us from a variety of backgrounds. They are 40% Caucasian, 36% Hispanic, 18% African American, and 4% Asian and mixed races. We serve a population of students with over 30% coming from low income socioeconomic backgrounds. Our middle school serves over 1600 students. We have a diverse student body of English language learners, special education students, and students with learning disabilities.
The students of our area have endured a traumatic school year following the devastation of Hurricane Harvey which destroyed homes, damaged properties, and left many students displaced.
We are Texas Strong, and we are a community that sticks together and helps our fellow neighbors and friends. Our students continually give back to the community by service learning projects. They work hard to provide food, clothing, and toys to those in need, to clean up our roads with trash pick up, and to perform music concerts for our local retirement home.
Our students are involved in many different aspects of learning. We are an AVID demonstration campus integrating college readiness at the middle school level. We have a Gifted & Talented program to extend student-led learning. Our school is also extending our STEAM program and encouraging students to guide their own learning by creating and experimenting in the arts.
My Project
We need 4 Chromebooks with protective keyboard covers to help my students learn about food. The students will use the Chromebooks both in the kitchen labs and in the class lectures. We will have a mobile classroom, so it is important to be able to take technology with us wherever our classroom goes.
My students will work in groups to research food recipes, look at cooking technique videos, and design their own food blogs.
The students can guide their own learning as they research the history of food and how food trends have changed over years.
Knowledge is truly power, and understanding the science of food is important to our next generation of chefs.
