Cooking Up the Alphabet

My students need a convection toaster oven and an electric skillet.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Cooking Up the Alphabet… I teach Pre-Kindergarten at a high poverty school. My students love making their own snacks. My goal as a teacher is for my students to learn to recognize the letters of the alphabet, know the sounds of the letters and retain the knowledge.

Each week we concentrate on a new letter. We do various activities to engage the students. Each Friday I tie in a cooking lesson. For Instance: for the letter “R”, we made rainbow cookies. We spread ice cream and frosting onto graham crackers and sprinkled fruity pebbles on the top. My objective is to really be able to cook, not just use ready-made foods.

It would be wonderful to have a convection oven and an electric skillet. For instance, for the letter “S”, we could use bread dough to make a snake. The students could manipulate their dough into a letter “S” and place chocolate chips into the dough for the snake eyes. For the letter "P", my students could make "Puppy Pancakes". If we had a these appliances, it would make it possible for my students to bake snakes, make puppy pancakes and many more delicious snacks. This is a great way to incorporate learning the letters of the alphabet and cooking. What a terrific way to leave a lasting impression on my current students and future students.

Some of the objectives for Pre-Kindergarten are for the students to know that letters of the alphabet are a special category of visual graphics that can be individually named and begin to recognize the sound association for letters. It is also important for young children to be able to touch and feel because they are tactile learners. Your sponsorship will ensure my students develop these skills. Your support will benefit every student by enhancing his or her understanding and ability to use knowledge. Students will be able to identify upper and lowercase alphabet letters, say the sounds of the letters and understand the relationship between letters and sounds.
