Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a Functional Academic Curriculum Track class at the middle school level. My students all have intellectual disabilities. In my class, my special needs students are learning valuable life skills.
One of the main priorities in my classroom is creating independence in all of my students!
It is important that students learn basic skills. When provided with the correct individualized tools, all students can succeed! My class has a wide array of disabilities; therefore, our learning materials need to accommodate all types of learners. Materials with a variety of visual cues are most helpful.
For this reason, my students will be participating in different activities that will help them be prepared for the next stage of their lives. Some of these activities include, daily life skills like meal planning, cooking, cleaning and grocery shopping. Each one of my students has different goals that they are focusing on, but no matter how big or small, they never give up. As a teacher, I love watching my students acquire a new skill and see how students take ownership and pride of their lives. The creativity connection and life skills that come from real life experiences help my students aquire independence.
My Project
My students are in a functional academic curriculum track class in a middle school. They need to practice life skills in cooking and putting food items together for a meal. Many of my students do not get the experience at home to help learn how to cook and parents don't have time to do this, so I want to start my lessons on cooking.
My students need visual step by step cookbooks for non readers, timers, food supplies such as flour, pasta, beans, rice, cookie mix, and tomato sauce to make nutritious food.
They will learn math skills to help them plan meals, and to calculate the cost per serving to help them budget their expenses when they are older. They will follow step by step visual cookbooks to make dough, pasta, sauces, soups, and countless other recipes that will help them make basic meals. They will collect recipes to make their own cookbooks to use at home. Help me make this possible for my students by helping fund this project.
