Cooking Up on Life Skills

My Students

I am a special education teacher (cross-categorical) in a small, rural school district and serve students with a wide range of abilities. Our school district has 3 teachers (elementary, middle, and high school). Due to the number of students, I work with grades 7-12 this year.

My students love learning new skills when presented in a manner that is enjoyable.

Aside from them enjoying reading new stories, they love activities that get them moving. They especially love learning life skills like cooking and cleaning.

My Project

The refrigerator is for the school's new life skills room. The district is allowing us to set up a room for students with different abilities. The refrigerator would allow students to store ingredients that they will practice preparing to cook simple meals. Students need extra practice preparing simple meals, cleaning, and doing laundry.

Students will be expected to make a shopping list and follow a recipe to prepare a simple meal.

The students will utilize the refrigerator to store cooking materials, determine if materials still usable (checking dates), etc. Having a refrigerator will students to store materials for preparing meals that they wouldn't have a way to store in the classroom.
