I teach a diverse group of moderate to severe learning disabled students, some with fragile medical needs. Some of the students have autism or Down syndrome, one with cerebral palsy, one with mitochondrial disease (making her very fragile). The students all have amazing attitudes and are very hard working. They love coming to school and learning. Each student has a fun, playful sense of humor and they make my "work" day, a "play" day, every single day. These students fill my life with joy and I want to provide the best and most meaningful education I can for them in return. I recently shared with a colleague that my students are gifts from heaven- I am so blessed to be their teacher!
My students are learning basic life skills like shopping in the community and following simple recipes and meal preparation. My students LOVE to cook and look forward every Thursday to shopping at Trader Joe's for our cooking project on Fridays.
We will use our cooking tools for special projects like our yearly Thanksgiving Feast with all the fixings and our Mother's Day high tea this May.
The cooking tools we need will help us: make cookies and scones, pancakes, french toast, casseroles, and many items for our yearly Thanksgiving feast. The students are learning to follow simple recipes and measure, mix and pour. They are learning to use stoves and griddles safely and are learning to flip items like pancakes and quesadillas. There truly is no end to what my students can learn with the right attitude and proper cooking tools. Thanks so much for considering our project! My students are angels and are truly worth it!
