My students need a mobile kitchen to provide an avenue for cross-content connections through cooking and baking in a safe way. Students will have learning opportunities such as measurement, fractions, functional text, and following directions.
I teach at a Title I school in Virginia, where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of our students utilize assistance based programs. Our students come to school every day, eager to learn and ready to take on the challenges of the day. Students come to school with the materials and supplies offered at our back to school bash.
Many families cannot afford to purchase school supplies.
Given these obstacles it is my job as their teacher to find the necessary materials and supplies they need to be successful.
My Project
The goal for the Mobile Kitchen is to provide an avenue for cross-content connections through cooking and baking in a safe way in which students can lead the cooking and baking. Through the Mobile Kitchen, students will engage in many learning opportunities such as measurement, fractions, functional text, following directions, sequencing events, chemistry, literacy extensions, and even how to meet basic needs. Our students would have another experience for developing much-needed background knowledge.
Students will use either the oven or the burner to cook foods.
They will use the measuring, mixing, and cutting tools to prepare the foods. The Mobile Kitchen is a student centered approach to teaching students how to follow directions and prepare either a meal or dessert. The hands-on experience will allow them the opportunity to get messy with the ingredients for learning.
The Mobile Kitchen would be utilized by all teachers and grades at our school. Further, the Mobile Kitchen would connect with already existing programs in our building. Students could pick fresh fruits and vegetables from the school garden to utilize in recipes.
