My students need kitchen equipment to help them develop job skills.
They can use the table to help prepare food. The knives will help with cutting because the knives we have right now are dull.
My students are in the Occupational Course of Study (OCS) pathway at the high school level (9th-12th grades). The OCS program is a special education program where students earn their high school diploma through earning work hours. We currently have 31 students enrolled in the program. They have a wide range of different learning disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities. Each student must have 150 in school work hours, 225 community based work hours, and 225 paid employment work hours for graduation.
Our EC department started a coffee shop called the Devil’s Brew (our school mascot is the Blue Devil) to help our students earn their in school work hours and develop real life skills.
We serve iced coffee, lemonade, brownies, cupcakes, and coffee to the other students at school. We also make lunches to sell to teachers at the high school and elementary school on Fridays. Every Wednesday, we offer a meal cooked by a guest chef and our students to teachers at the middle school to take home to their families. The coffee shop helps students learn valuable work skills needed for their paid employment experiences out in the community.
My Project
Our program is an Occupational Course of Study program. Our students learn job skills through hands-on activities. We invite guest chefs to come to help us prepare meals for school staff. We sell those meals to help our program earn money for different class trips. Our students rely on donations and selling goods from our coffee shop to earn money.
We have a start to the kitchen but we could use some upgrades.
We want to thank you in advance for your donations. We really appreciate everything! Thank you for your help in letting our students succeed. Thank you again!
The knives will be helpful when we have guest chefs come as well as the prep table that can be sanitized appropriately. We make brownies daily and are currently using plastic bowls that tend to crack easily.
