My students need these cooking essentials, including a nonstick cookware set, blender, slow cooker, mixing bowls, utensils, measuring cups and spoons, and some kids aprons.
I teach in a low-income neighborhood school that up until recently has had a small enrollment. Many of our students are English language learners which can be challenging. These students benefit from hands-on learning which helps foster language acquisition and mathematics skills.
This year, before school started, Hurricane Harvey hit our area and water was in 80-90% of the homes in our town.
My children have very little to begin the school year with. I would like for them to have as normal of a school year as possible.
I love teaching these children because they are eager to learn even with all the devastation they have seen in their little lives.
My Project
This year, Hurricane Harvey came through our area and dumped about 50 inches of water over the course of 24 hours. Many of the the homes in our district had to be gutted as a result of the water and many of the students at our school had to be rescued from their homes by boats. As you can imagine, this has been an extraordinarily trying situation. One way to help our students get back to a sense of normalcy is though cooking experiences.
I am requesting these "kitchen items" so that we can use them to enhance our learning.
For example, last year we did a unit on folk tales and we read the story about Stone Soup. We would like to be able to make Stone Soup with the children. Through cooking experiences, children learn many things including math, language, self help skills and much more.
