Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a first-grade teacher at a Title I funded school in the Houston Independent School District that currently also serves fifty-one Katrina enrollees. The majority of our students receive free or reduced lunch and come from low economic backgrounds. Many of my students' parents speak little or no English and have very limited education. I have created this monthly cooking unit in my classroom that my students seem to enjoy. I find it hard at times to do some of the cooking activities because of the equipment that is needed. I would love to have the basic equipment for our monthly cooking activities because these activities allow my students to experience the joy and wonder of learning about where food comes from. I envision my cooking project as a way for children to acquire both the competence and caring that is necessary to create a sustainable future. I think it is very important for my students to understand the difference between foods that are healthy and foods that are unhealthy. I hope to give them enough understanding that will help them make the right decisions. The materials needed for this project are a class size refrigerator, a microwave oven (1.0 cubic foot)baking equipment, toaster oven, and electric mixer and blender.
