My Students

I teach biology, anatomy and physiology, and agricultural science to 9th through 12th grade students at an urban, public, science charter school. Students come from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, from communities throughout the city. My students are racially diverse, identifying themselves primarily as Hispanic, Pacific Islander, or Caucasian.

The group of students with whom I work is highly motivated and passionate about learning.

They are very interested in developing questions and finding answers through hands-on scientific investigations. They thrive when participating in learning experiences that are student-directed and encourage them to apply their knowledge to "real life" issues.

My Project

Learning how to cook is not only important in developing healthy nutritional habits, but it is also beneficial in supporting social-emotional learning. It provides individuals with a sense of self-confidence, provides an opportunity for creativity, and offers a way to engage with their community. While my school has an available cooking space, it does not have the equipment needed to support whole-class culinary learning experiences. By having a food processor, cook sets, and a Vitamix, students will be able to participate in a variety of cooking activities.

By donating to this project, you will provide students with the tools necessary to learn how to cook and to understand how they can use cooking to support their social and emotional development.

Students will be able to visit the school kitchen with their classes and collaborate with their peers to create different food items. They will be able to share foods from each other's families, celebrate individual differences while building community, and develop healthy ways to approach emotional challenges.
