Cooking Our Way Through the Kindergarten Curriculum

My students need mixing bowls, measuring cups, a slow cooker, and a counter top stove to experience preparing and cooking food as related to the content areas.

I am a kindergarten teacher in a high-need community. I teach in a facility that has no cooking facility which is an essential component of the early childhood curriculum.

The soup is boiling and the cookies are in the oven. The aromas of fresh food waft through the air and your taste buds begin to water. You envision a gourmet chef, standing before you. But wait, stop the video, there is no chef, no smells, just words and pictures from the literacy or science unit. Your students turn to you with those large eyes and you ponder, how can I make this unit come alive? Kindergarten today is not what it was years ago. The early childhood curriculum is centered around the content area of literacy, math, science and social studies. Today's kindergarten is comparable to first grade. There is great emphasis on reading, writing, math and science. What better way to make these areas come to life than through hands on activities, like cooking and baking.

In order to integrate cooking into my units, I need a few cooking essentials to get started. The five senses unit will come alive with a host of cooking and baking activities. The stove will help us bake the cookies and the mixing bowls and measuring cups will help with the preparation. The unit on fractions will have new meaning when we use measuring cups. In addition, the slow cooker will be used for our literacy units that talk about soup; along with preparing delicious dishes for our cultural celebrations. All these activities will endow the children with a host of writing activities for their journals.

I have been teaching for over 18 years and I have never been in an early childhood center that does not have a cooking facility. The cooking and baking activities that I propose will enhance our early childhood curriculum. It will help us understand concepts that otherwise are to be seen just in books and movies. For some, these experiences are lacking in their own homes because today's parents lack the time or interest, to bake or prepare a homemade soup. A longterm goal would be, that these memories will stick with the children forever, and they will be inspired to bake and cook with their own children.
