Cooking Lab Portable Sink

My Project

I teach in a life skills classroom with transition-aged students (ages 14-21) with exceptional needs. My students have extensive learning needs and may come from low economic family backgrounds. My students love smaller groups, hands-on learning, modeling, repeated practice, engaging activities, and high-quality visual and adapted materials.

Each and every stride in independence greatly improves my students' confidence, happiness, and lives and is a great help to the family system at home.

Independent living is an area of focus in my classroom. My students need continued practice with personal care, hygiene, cooking, cleaning, and safety to become as independent as possible before graduating.

When learning to cook in my classroom, can be a challenge because we do not have a true kitchen. We do not have a sink for washing hands or dishes. A portable sink with hot and cold water, a counter top and cabinets would greatly help to upgrade our area for cooking. This would save us time from having to dismiss the whole class to a restroom in the school building to wash while cooking and working with our hands.

Having access to a sink right in the classroom would also help with proper hygiene care throughout the day for students who need extra practice and support. It would also help with classroom cleaning jobs and watering our plants. The countertop and extra cabinets will give us an extra surface area to prep materials and extra storage for our kitchen utensils and cookware. A portable sink would get immediate use in our classroom with cooking lab lessons, hand washing lessons, dishwashing, and lessons on how to properly clean and sanitize a sink and counter.
