In the real world, cooking takes much more time than what we are used to seeing in cooking shows. If we want students to watch and learn from every step of the process of cooking something, it is nearly impossible to do.
My class of kindergarten students are all very energetic and eager to learn.
Located in a very low income community in NYC, a lot of these students are receiving free school lunch. Because our students come from very diverse backgrounds, our social studies units of study all involve some form of cooking with our students. Through food, our students are united even though their life outside of school may be very different from one another.
My Project
In these past few years, we have included many cooking sessions with our students when we do our apple study in the fall, and our bread study in the spring. What I realized from these past years is that something needs to be done to speed up the process when I show my students how to cook something from beginning to end. With lunch time, it is very hard to manage getting the prepping of the food done with the students and having enough time at the end of the day for them to taste the end product. With the bread maker, juicer, mixer, and cooking supplies, the process of prepping the food will be much easier and faster than when they see me do each step by hand.
Making bread is a very long process that includes a lot of measuring, mixing, kneading, and shaping, before it goes into the oven, and coming out to be cut and served.
To allow students to have enough time to shape and create a piece of bread on their own, the whole process of setting up the classroom and all the steps to make the dough needs to be sped up. With the funding of this project, I will be able to do just that, and have enough time to clearly explain each step as it is being done.
