Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students cover a full spectrum at our diverse campus. They vary in race, culture, socioeconomic status and interests. Our campus serves approximately 635 students in grades 7th through 8th who are between the ages of 12 and 14.
Ethnically, our students are approximately 87% minority with 45% being Latin American, 26% African American, and 13% Asian and Pacific Islander.
About 25% of our students are currently English Language Learners. Our special education students make up 10% of the entire site.
All of the special education students and English Language Learners and their parents could benefit from having access to books about parenting, a very important skill to collaborate and work together.
My Project
I would love to create a club for students who will learn the joy of cooking for themselves and cooking for others. Students want to give back to teachers, and teachers love nothing more than food. I want to create a club where students can bake or cook for teachers after school. That can be served to them the next day during lunchtime or nutrition break. I will work with students to learn how to make both fun and traditional dishes.
I am hoping that this will create a community that involves both teachers and students.
This community will come together over a love of food and the act of preparing food. To get me started, I am asking for a smart oven and a bakeware kit to teach students some of the basic science behind baking. I hope that these lessons will encourage students to understand the real-world applications of science and how to give to others.
I am also hoping that this will help with parent involvement where we can teach healthy cooking lessons to parents. We could also have parents come into the club and teach students how to create different dishes.
