Our students are diagnosed with Autism and in need of supplies to learn functional life skills that help them to become more independent in their everyday lives. These supplies are for our students who have severe and profound developmental disabilities and who are diagnosed with Autism. Our students with Autism in particular, need to become proficient in topics related to cleaning, clerical tasks, landscaping and gardening, property maintenance, food preparation and self-care skills. Many of our students are non-verbal and come here to learn formal methods of communication through sign language, picture symbols and voice output devices. Our students range in age from 14 – 21.
My Project
At the RCOTC in Brooklyn, our students learn vocational skills that will help them to participate their local communities through volunteer work, or hopefully find employment after graduation. Additionally, our students who are diagnosed with Autism are taught through Applied Behavior Analysis teaching protocols. Supplies that are not a part of a typical curriculum are needed to teach behavior modification and daily living skills. With these materials, our students will have the opportunity to learn how to become independent young adults at home by helping their families with household chores such as setting the table, doing laundry, preparing food, etc. Our students will learn vocational skills such as food preparation, cooking and kitchen clean up while supervised at home by their parents. Help them make the best of their time here at the The RCOTC Center!
