My students are in a Special Education Self-Contained classroom. I work with another teacher to benefit our students to the best of our abilities. They come from lower social economic systems. Many students come to school with poor hygiene. My students specifically are lower all around cognitively and developmentally behind socially and have little chance of being able to live fully independently. They each have their unique and special personalities that occasionally clash, but they are the sweetest and most sincere students in the school.
The students in my classroom want to be like other students in the school but need a lot of additional support to have that opportunity.
In my classroom, we have hands-on activities and some technology to help enhance comprehension and functional math skills to give my students the best chance they have at independence. My classroom is currently working on more community based experiences. My students are even more excited to learn and come to school because of this initiative to include community based experiences.
My Project
My school administration have been so supportive in allowing my self contained classroom to focus more on life skills. One of the biggest life skills we and parents want our students to learn is how to cook. We began cooking a few meals this year, but realized we did not have adequate supplies such as an Electric Griddle or Cooking Utensils.
These supplies will be crucial in allowing our students to gain functional life skills.
Utensils and griddles will allow my students more access to the cooking and other functional skills necessary in succeeding in the real world. My students will be cooking grilled cheese sandwiches, pancakes, cookies, salad, mini pizzas, spaghetti, and much more. These materials will add to the collection of cookbooks previously obtained to better enhance the current curriculum already in place.
