Cooking is fun for everyone! I learned this year that when a lesson involved food I had a 100% attention. When I did not involve food everything else that was going on in class was more interesting. So I want to develop a cooking class that will address my students educational individual goals.
In my classroom of students with multiple disabilities accessing the curriculum often takes creativity and "out of the box" thinking. As a result, of my students physical and cognitive limitations abstract subjects are usually rejected by my students. In order to learn they need hands on experiences.
Cooking is the perfect activity. Its a multi-sensory activity that covers all areas of the curriculum--Math, Science, Language Arts, Social Studies...Likewise, my students are highly motivated to participate and learn with the promise of a tasty treat.
The Cooking Center will provide our classroom with a weekly a cooking lesson that will give our students opportunities to learn across the curriculum. I love that they will be able to independently activate electrical appliances with our school's adaptation devices. I love that they will be learning a real life skill. I love that we all can relate to cooking including my students.
