My Students

My diverse group of middle school students is AMAZING! There are eleven different languages spoken by the students at my middle school: Samoan, Vietnamese, Nuer, Arabic, Hmong, Tongan, Russian, Yupik, Chinese, Trukese, and Spanish. As you can see, my school serves students who are English as a Second Language Learners as well as Gifted, Highly Gifted, and students with disabilities. They come from all walks of life. Some are living the dream in the nicest neighborhoods in Alaska while others are sofa surfing or living in shelters. One of my students had her bed in the living room of her family's apartment. Currently, 308 of our 743 students qualify for free- or reduced lunches.

Visualize a tapestry and how the individual fibers intertwine to create a beautiful picture bursting with color and texture.

That's my school. Despite our differences, the students at our middle school work together and enrich our school with their varied backgrounds and experiences.

My Project

The plan for Cooking 101: Crock-Pot Kids is to help students in financial need to develop resiliency skills and to promote healthy lifestyles by teaching them how to prepare easy and nutritious meals using limited resources.

When describing dinnertime at home, one of my 7th graders called it "FFY" or "fend for yourself." He described looking through the cupboards at home to find something he could make into a burrito for supper for himself and his younger brother.

He was the student who inspired the idea for the crock-pot cooking class.

Since then, over 30 families have benefited from the crock-pot cooking class. Several of the kids were taking care of younger brothers and sisters while their parent/guardian worked at night. One student had to move to Anchorage from a small village in Alaska while her mom received cancer treatment. She not only helped her family by cooking a meal every week, but she also made friends in the class.

Each student who participates in the program will receive a crock-pot, crock-pot cookbook and/or serving utensils, and a weekly cooking class for five weeks where they can taste test one of the crock pot meals. They will also have time to prepare the ingredients which will be provided free of charge to take home to cook in his/her crock-pot.

In addition to having at least one healthy meal in the evening, the students will be learning a real-world skill...Cooking! This can lead to better memory and focus in class as well as improved health that could decrease absences. The students might even feel more connected to the school. Plus, they'll be developing resiliency skills and improving their self-esteem because they are learning to provide for themselves and their families.
