Help me give my students a cookbook collection to satisfy their constant requests for more cookbooks for library checkout - to satisfy their creative callings and provide them books that will grow their talents and abilities!
Located on the JBER base of Anchorage, Alaska, our elementary school serves a uniquely multicultural student population which has been brought together from a wide array of hometowns, backgrounds, and life experiences. One thing common to ALL of our students is they are all children of active-duty military service members & some families sacrifice includes two active-duty service personnel.
One of the most popular shelves in our library is our forever empty cookbook section - which stays forever-empty because OUR STUDENTS of ALL AGES ARE SUPER HOT FOR COOKBOOKS and their CRAVING for COOKBOOKS FAR EXCEEDS OUR COOKBOOK COLLECTION!
Being able to check out, read, and use cook books not only takes a specific and unique set of reading skills, but it's also a creative way to spend time at home with family and to engage in creative activities when one or both parents are away defending our country.
My Project
Each day our library is swamped by students' cries for more cookbooks as our few cookbooks disappear before being shelved - leaving many empty handed in their desire to take home a cookbook for hands-on learning, real life practice, taste testing with their families and an amazing feeling of achievement at learning a new and life-long skills of cooking and baking!
Most students will share their new skills with family and friends, others do bring their treats to school to share with teachers and friends, yet some students may go on to become talented bakers, cooks, or chefs with marketable lifetime skills.
Our upcoming school newsletters will feature a student cooks and bakers' corner where our crazy about cooking kids are able to share their own favorite recipes!
