I teach Family and Consumer Science classes at an alternative high school. My main focus is to teach hands-on skills that will benefit students in their future.
What I love about my students is their desire to overcome adversity.
Some individuals were bullied in previous schools and came here to find respite. Some students are the bread-winners of their family and need a flexible school that works with their work schedule. Some will be first-generation high school graduates. One-third of my students have IEP or 504 accommodations. Over half of our students are economically disadvantaged and cannot bring basic school supplies to school.
No matter what situation they are in, they know they can come to school (at least virtually for now) and feel love, appreciation, and respect.
My Project
This project will provide my students with the supplies they need for an "At Home" cooking class. Due to recent health concerns in the world (Covid-19), our school has decided to continue the school year virtually with classes being held online. Most students come from low socio-economic backgrounds. Some students are homeless, spending their time couch surfing between friends and extended family. In order to have a successful cooking class, my students need supplies and equipment! Your donation will go toward purchasing slow cooker crock pots for my students to use at home.
A number of my students are living on their own, eating only ramen noodles and hot cheetos.
Learning about nutrition, meal planning, along with safety and sanitation will support them now and in the future. Help my students learn the skills to feel confident in the kitchen.
