Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Remember your high school American Literature course- forcing yourself to read classics like The Scarlet Letter or The Grapes of Wrath? My students will read these, but I want them to also realize that many of the themes from those classics exist in modern day novels and modern day life.
My students are wonderful kids.
They are juniors, they love to debate modern issues, but they hate to read. I want to change this by showing them that books can be fun, interesting, and relate to their lives.
My students, when engaged in the material, create surprisingly high level work. They like to be challenged and will rise to that challenge. Because they attend a title-1 school, many people discount them- but my students are the underdogs, who never give, dream big, and will accomplish those dreams.
My students are incredibly compassionate and they care very much for civil rights, helping those less fortunate than them, and doing the right thing. Sometimes they make bad decisions, but they are not bad kids. They are in need of materials that will foster their critical thinking skills and adults who encourage their ideas.
My Project
The books that I am requesting will allow my students to choose a novel to read (7 choices). The novels are selected because they deal with modern day teen issues that they can relate to and become quickly engaged in. This unit will serve to get my students talking about controversial ideas, reading about the issues from a variety of view points, analyzing literature, and working in small groups. These books will allow my students to challenge themselves in new ways, they will become critical thinkers about today's issues. They will also see that many of the themes from the classics that they dread reading so much are represented in today's literature- allowing them to re-examine their own thoughts about the classics.
I hope that when this unit is over, the students will continue to read modern day stories- I hope they will talk to one another about their books, switch them amongst themselves, and become avid readers and thinkers.
I would like this to be just a catalyst for future reading, thinking, and action.
