My students need copies of 1984 to understand the dangers of a totalitarian government and to understand how to have a positive impact on the society around them.
For seniors who are about to go off into the world, reading about the dangers of a totalitarian society helps them think and prompts them to learn about how to make a positive impact in the society around them.
Students at my school love to discuss current and real world events - we just finished a unit which culminated in a Mock Trial and students were engaged, prepared, and focused on asking questions to best prepare for their arguments.
Encouraging students to read novels that they are high interest will not only prepare them for college, but also for participating in the society around them.
My Project
Reading 1984 will help students understand dystopian literature and understand how to create a good society. This novel will increase student interest in reading and will prepare students for the reading that is necessary in college and in the job market.
Being able to compare the ideas in 1984 with the ideas in Brave New World will help students learn to use contrasting visions of the future to sharpen their critical thinking skills.
This book is a classic that teaches students about Big Brother, Doublethink, propaganda, and the dangers of not questioning authority. It is an action packed novel that will engage students in their reading.
