it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Hi Donors,
I'm a Life Skills teacher at an urban middle school in a low socio-economic neighborhood. I work with students who have severe and profound physical and/or cognitive disabilities. Right now, I'm helping a really amazing student with cerebral palsy. CP is a condition that can be completely different from individual to individual. With this student, it manifests as an inability of the motor cortex to send messages to his muscles. His brain can not tell his body what to do. Yet his cognitive functions are intact. He can reason. Well, as well as any other 12-year-old boy.
E wants to take control of his life. That is why I'm asking for your help. He can not interact with a computer the same way that you and I do. He can not control his arms, hands, and fingers well enough to use a keyboard much less write with a pen or pencil. But he can talk. His Science teacher would say, "Boy, can he talk!"
Technology has come a long way in our lifetime. Now, they even have applications that let you talk to your computer to tell it what to do. That is what I am asking from you. To purchase speech recognition software so that my student will have a viable means to interface with computers.
With this program E could write his own essays for class assignments. He could take notes. He could have his own e-mail account, or even a place on MySpace. Just like his peers all over the country.
This software will bring him within reach of his dreams, to control his own destiny. Technology is on the precipice of revolutionizing the lives of individuals with physical disabilities. Learning the intricacies of verbally interfacing with a computer will give him the ability to take advantage of this revolution.
Please help me make a difference for this student.
